Featured Activist Spring 2012 - Jess Rinehart

I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and will be graduating with a major in Political Science and minors in History and Women & Gender's Studies. I got involved with Planned Parenthood through the student organization, Advocates for Choice, in the Spring of 2011. Joining A4C allowed me to be a more active member on campus and combine my passions of being politically involved and fighting for women's rights.

I love working with Planned Parenthood so much and have been an intern with PPAWI since the Fall 2011 semester. Being an intern is always a blast! My passion is in politics, so my internship has been focused on legislative issues. I had no idea it would be such an active legislative year. I have worked a lot by gathering petitions and educating others on what is happening with access to reproductive healthcare. There have been a lot of attacks on women's healthcare this last year and we have worked to try to prevent poor legislation from passing, educate students about what is happening and how to get involved, and hold legislators accountable for their votes. This also means we get to thank legislators for doing the right thing, like when President Obama included birth control and preventative health care in the Affordable Care Act. I look forward to advocating successfully for more positive legislation in the future!

Featured Activist Winter 2012 - Sara Mattson

I have been volunteering at Planned Parenthood for just about a year, my focus being in the Advocacy department. I feel so lucky to be able to help out the wonderful ladies I work with. I have always been passionate about access to birth control and womens health issues. Even more so now that they are in such danger.

I am currently working in a rather trendy spot in the Third Ward, and have been for 7 years. I have a knack for dealing with the public, it's work that I truly enjoy. My early years were spent dealing with a myriad of health issues, which meant that I spent a big chunk of time in the hospital. Being the sickly child that I was, and still dealing with some health issues to this day, makes me VERY interested in the ongoing battle for BadgerCare and health care access for those in need. The fact I volunteer for an agency that cares about those same issues makes me proud.

Through volunteering I have had the opportunity to learn SO much. I was able to take some classes that I know will come in handy, not only in a professional capacity, but in my personal life as well. I have done outreach events at Pridefest and Bay View Bash, phone banks and I was lucky enough to help plan the 'Volunteer Thank You' holiday party for Milwaukee.

Planned Parenthood has enriched my life, so I say 'Thank you!' for the chance to be a part of such an organization. I look forward to helping out in any way I can!

Featured Activist Fall 2011 - Santera Michels

I am a fourth year student studying Gender and Women's Studies and Biology. At the intersection of gender studies and biology I believe there is an interesting discussion taking place concerning health care access for marginalized communities. I love how Planned Parenthood has stepped up to the plate in order to make sure that people have access to health care. Planned Parenthood is there for our community so I dedicate as much time as I can to help the organization in whatever way I can.

My favorite way to volunteer with Planned Parenthood is during community outreach events. Whenever people see the pink Planned Parenthood table cloth, people's eyes light up and they run over to the Planned Parenthood booth to share what an important role Planned Parenthood has played in their lives. I have had an awesome time getting to know people in the Planned Parenthood community--whether they be staff members, interns, volunteers or patients.

I am so grateful for having Planned Parenthood in my life, words cannot even express!  I got involved with Planned Parenthood by simply going to their open house at their Green Bay clinic. I had heard of volunteer opportunities and wanted to check it out. There I was asked if I would be interested in doing volunteer work on the activism side of things which kind of freaked me out because I was just expected to do some office work, I never saw myself as the “activist type”.   But I gave it a shot and got involved and I'm really glad that I did.

Since attending the open house, I have become very involved with the UW-Green Bay Advocates for Choice group.  It has allowed me so many amazing experiences including meeting many new likeminded individuals and attending a youth organizing conference in Washington, DC.  When I first started out I was pretty unsure of myself and felt awkward and shy but now I feel like I am significantly more confident and outgoing.

Advocates for Choice is providing me with the tools I'll be using in the real world; I am going to school for Non-Profit Management and Women's Health Topics and I love being able to apply what I am learning while I'm still a student.  While working with the student organization, I am able to learn more about how things work and it really compliments my education nicely.
