Statement by Nicole Safar, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin’s Legal and Policy Analyst, on the removal of Contraceptive Equity Repeal from the state budget:
“The budget provision repealing Wisconsin’s contraceptive law has been removed from Governor Walker’s proposal, which means insured women remain protected from discriminatory prescription drug coverage—for now. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin will continue to protect this law, which ensures birth control is a covered under prescription drug plans just like all other prescriptions. It is simply a matter of fairness and basic health care.
“The repeal of the Contraceptive Equity law is now a stand alone bill in the state legislature. Women’s health, reproductive health care and birth control continue to be under attack in Wisconsin.
“Women’s health continues to be in serious jeopardy in the state budget. As is, the budget proposal would eliminate Wisconsin’s only women’s health and family planning program, which provides funding for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and dozens of other women’s health providers across the state. At these women’s health centers, uninsured Wisconsinites receive basic health care like lifesaving cancer screenings, annual exams, STD testing and treatment and birth control. The budget proposal also eliminates men’s family planning coverage under the BadgerCare Family Planning Program, taking away essential, lifesaving reproductive health care from uninsured men.
“Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin urges the Joint Finance Committee to protect family planning access. Eliminating access and early detection through these preventive care programs would lead to more cancer deaths, more undiagnosed HIV and untreated STDs, more unintended pregnancies and more costs for Wisconsin taxpayers.”
