Mitt Romney Visits Wisconsin
Fails to Address His Extreme Views on Women’s Health
MADISON- Presidential candidate Mitt Romney stopped in Janesville today to give a campaign speech. What Romney did not mention in his speech is his extreme views on women’s health and what his presidency would do for the women of Janesville and the women all over Wisconsin. When it comes to women’s health there is no comparison between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.
“President Obama has increased access to health care for millions of Americans, has guaranteed access to affordable birth control and has ensured women can continue getting healthcare at Planned Parenthood,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “He is a true champion for women and women’s health and his record proves it.”
President Obama has protected federal funding to Planned Parenthood the nation’s largest non-profit reproductive health care provider serving 1 in 5 women in their lifetime. By passing the Affordable Care Act, President Obama ensured that birth control is 100% covered by insurance companies without a co-pay which will save women hundreds of dollars a year in out of pocket costs. He has expanded health coverage to millions of women and their families including 12.8 million women of reproductive age. He ended insurance practices that discriminate against women and worked to ensure new insurance plans cover maternity and newborn care.
In contrast to President Obama, Mitt Romney would restrict access to birth control, would eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood’s health services and would end federal family planning programs under Title X. Title X helps millions of Americans have access to basic preventative health care and according to Guttmacher Institute saved taxpayers $3.4 billion in 2008 amounting to nearly $4 saved for every $1 spent yet Mitt Romney wants to cut this program. According to a 2011 analysis, Title X health centers have prevented 973,000 unintended pregnancies and 443,000 abortions in 2008 alone.
Here in Wisconsin, Title X serves 50,000 patients this year. 71% of these patients live at or below the federal poverty line, 95% are women, 88% are young women over the age of 18 and 61% are uninsured. Title X health centers save lives through prevention and early detection. In Wisconsin, Title X centers are the biggest provider of cervical cancer screens. Earlier this year, Governor Walker and the Republican controlled legislature eliminated state funding for health exams, birth control, STI testing and treatment, and cervical and breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
“President Obama has saved thousands of lives and billions of taxpayer dollars by investing in preventative care,” said Atkinson. “Here in Wisconsin we have seen firsthand the enactment of dangerous policies that limit access to birth control and cancer screenings and we can’t afford to have that same caviler attitude towards women in the White House. When it comes to women’s health there is no comparison.”
