Paul Ryan Has Been Wrong for Wisconsin Women and is Wrong for American Women

Today, Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney announced Congressman Paul Ryan for his Vice Presidential running mate. Congressman Ryan has been an out of touch member of the Wisconsin congressional delegation and has a disturbing record on women’s health.

“If there were any lingering doubts about Mitt Romney’s position on women’s health issues they ended today,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “It is very disappointing to see Mitt Romney choose a candidate that does not support women’s health.  Congressman Ryan has one of the worst records in congress on women’s issues.”

Congressman Ryan voted last year to end funding to Planned Parenthood, putting at risk the cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing and treatment, and other preventive care that nearly three million Americans rely on each year, and 80,000 women and families rely on here in Wisconsin. He has said he would end all safe and legal abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the woman. Congressman Ryan’s budget plan dismantles Medicaid, jeopardizing the basic health care millions of women. He sponsored the so-called “personhood” legislation, which would give full constitutional rights to fertilized eggs and could ban some forms of birth control and fertility treatments.

“As a patient, I rely on Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin every year for the security of knowing I am healthy,” said Sue, a patient at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. “It is women like me that would no longer have access to preventative health care at Planned Parenthood. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s policies are out of touch and will impact me and millions of women across the country. We need to support President Obama who has stood with me by supporting Planned Parenthood.”

“1 in 5 women rely on Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and we see firsthand the women who will be hurt by Paul Ryan’s and Mitt Romney’s reckless policies,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin.  “Paul Ryan’s record shows that he wants to make decisions for women – decisions that should be left up to women, their doctors, their faith and their family. Paul Ryan has been wrong for Wisconsin women and is wrong for American women.”
