Wisconsin Primary Key for Women’s Health
Planned Parenthood Advocates highlights endorsed candidates on the eve of primary election day
Madison, WI – On the eve of the Wisconsin primary, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) is mobilizing voters to support their endorsed pro-women’s health candidates:
Tom Barrett, Governor
JoCasta Zamarippa, Assembly District 8 (Milwaukee)
Leon Young, Assembly District 16 (Milwaukee)
Barbara Toles, Assembly District 17 (Milwaukee)
Roger Anclam, Assembly District 45 (Beloit)
Bob Turner, Assembly District 61 (Racine)
Janet Bewley, Assembly District 74 (Ashland)
Gwen Moore, U.S. Representative District 4
Julie Lassa, U.S. Representative, District 7
“For women, this is an absolutely critical election,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “Thanks to pro-women’s health majorities in the state Legislature and a pro-women’s health Governor, pharmacies can no longer turn women away who want to fill their valid birth control prescriptions. Wisconsin public schools cannot use an ‘abstinence-only-unless-married’ curriculum for sex education. Wisconsin insurance companies cannot discriminate against women by refusing to cover her prescription birth control. Tomorrow, the voters must decide if they want to continue moving forward by electing women’s health champions, or if they want politicians to make personal, private health care decisions for Wisconsin women and families.”
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin’s endorsed candidates have demonstrated their commitment to the progressive health care standards and values that are core to Planned Parenthood’s mission. Candidates who support access to prevention based health care like birth control and comprehensive sex education will help Wisconsin women and families make informed, responsible decisions to prevent unintended pregnancy, enhance maternal and child health, and reduce the incidence of abortion.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin has launched an extensive voter mobilization effort leading up to the general election on November 2 aimed at turning out the vote for pro-women’s health candidates. By Election Day, Planned Parenthood will have made hundreds of thousands of voter contacts through the use of mail, phone, door-to-door canvasses and e-advocacy.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us to make sure that reproductive health care advocates build upon the historic gains we’ve made this past session,” Atkinson continued.
