Women’s Health Champions Victorious in Key Primary
All of Planned Parenthood Advocates endorsed candidates sweep on primary election day
Milwaukee, WI – Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin applauds each of its endorsed candidates who secured a victory in the primary election, including:
Tom Barrett, Governor
JoCasta Zamarippa, Assembly District 08 (Milwaukee)
Leon Young, Assembly District 16 (Milwaukee)
Barbara Toles, Assembly District 17 (Milwaukee)
Roger Anclam, Assembly District 45 (Beloit)
Bob Turner, Assembly District 61 (Racine)
Janet Bewley, Assembly District 74 (Ashland)
Gween Moore, U.S. Representative District 4
Julie Lassa, U.S. Representative, District 7
“The electorate spoke strongly in support of women’s health in yesterday’s Primary Election. I want to congratulate all PPAWI’s endorsed candidates who won, but our work is far from over,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “The next seven weeks will be crucial to ensure that reproductive health care advocates can build upon the historic gains we’ve made this past legislative session. It is time to get serious about electing a pro-women’s health Governor like Tom Barrett and state legislature.”
Planned Parenthood’s endorsed candidates have demonstrated their commitment to the progressive health care standards and values that are core to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin’s mission. Candidates who support access to prevention based health care like birth control and comprehensive sex education will help Wisconsin women and families make informed, responsible decisions to prevent unintended pregnancy, enhance maternal and child health, and reduce the incidence of abortion.
“Thanks to pro-women’s health majorities in the state Legislature and a pro-women’s health Governor, pharmacies can no longer turn women away who want to fill their valid birth control prescriptions. Wisconsin public schools cannot use an ‘abstinence-only-until-marriage’ curriculum for sex education. Wisconsin insurance companies cannot discriminate against women by refusing to cover her prescription birth control,” Atkinson continued. “In November, voters will decide if they want to continue moving forward by electing women’s health champions, or if they want extremists like Scott Walker making personal, private health care decisions for Wisconsin women and families.”
Post-primary, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin continues its aggressive statewide voter mobilization program aimed at turning out the vote for progressive candidates in the November elections. To learn more, visit www.ppawi.org/elections.
