Planned Parenthood Condemns Additional Cuts to Women’s Health
Calls on Elected Leaders to Return to Common Sense

At a time when people need jobs and access to affordable health care, members of the House of Representatives last night were instead focused on undermining women’s access to critical health care by passing H.R. 358. Among the many provisions, the bill eliminates protections for women seeking care in emergency circumstances, and would allow a hospital to deny lifesaving abortion care to a woman, even if a doctor deems it necessary.

“Like some members of our state Legislature, House leaders just can’t keep their eye on the ball and focus on jobs and the economy,” said Tanya Atkinson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin.

Despite rising poverty rates and plummeting median household income, Governor Walker and his legislative leadership have banned funding for nonprofit health care providers like Planned Parenthood and recently introduced proposals to drastically cut safety net health care programs and to repeal teen pregnancy prevention education programs.

“Recent reports documenting the decline in abortion rates and teen birth rates following the enactment of enhanced birth control access and sex education programs, should put a stop to proposals that seek to overturn these programs,” stated Atkinson. “Yet too many of our elected state and federal leaders are continuing to pursue these misplaced, ideological and dangerous priorities.”

“We call on our elected leaders to reverse course, review the recent reports and heed the call of professionals in medical community to enhance access to essential health care services for those in need,” stated Atkinson. “The health and economic well being of our communities depends on a return to common sense.”

Planned Parenthood health centers are trusted nonprofit health care providers that provide professional, reliable, and quality health care, including birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, annual exams, and STD testing and treatment to three million women and men across the country. One in five American women has been to a Planned Parenthood health center at some point in her life. In addition, six in 10 women who receive care from a women’s health center like those operated by Planned Parenthood consider it to be their main source of health care.

“Throughout these political attacks on women’s health, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has maintained our priorities by continuing to meet the health care needs for patients in need,” said Atkinson. “We urge our elected leaders to join with us in working to keep our community safe, healthy and strong.”
