Wisconsin Women Are Standing Up and Voting for Tom Barrett
New online video “We’re Standing Up for Tom Barrett” highlights outstanding record on women’s health

MADISON, WI –Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin has launched a fourth online video, this one featuring Wisconsin women who highlight Barrett’s outstanding record supporting health care access for women and families. “We’re Standing Up for Tom Barrett” features Wisconsin women talking about the historic gains Wisconsin women have made since Walker’s departure from the state Legislature and declaring their support for Tom Barrett for Governor.

“Tom Barrett is a champion for women’s health and he has been his entire career,” said Tanya Atkinson executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. “Unlike his opponent, Tom Barrett values prevention based and cost-effective family planning health care like birth control, cervical and breast cancer screenings. Barrett is the only candidate for governor who supports a woman’s right to make personal health care decisions without government interference.”

Family planning health care includes lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, birth control, and STD testing and treatment. Recent reporting by the Wall Street Journal estimates Wisconsin’s BadgerCare Family Planning program prevented 11,064 unplanned pregnancies at a savings of $139.1 million to the state. Analysis by the Guttmacher Institute, a respected national reproductive health care policy organization, estimates an investment in family planning saves taxpayers more than $4 for every $1 spent. Wisconsin law prohibits any public funding from paying for abortion care.

This is the fourth video in a series of planned online media and other voter mobilization aimed at educating voters about Tom Barrett’s exemplary record on women’s health. By Election Day, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin will have made hundreds of thousands of voter contacts to turn out the vote for Tom Barrett and other women’s health champions through the use of mail, phone, door-to-door canvasses and e-advocacy.

Republican candidate Scott Walker, endorsed by the anti-birth control organization Pro-Life Wisconsin, is the most extreme anti-women’s health candidate for governor to have achieved nomination from a major political party in Wisconsin. Scott Walker’s extreme anti-women’s health record is well documented and has also been the subject of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin’s outreach to voters.

“Wisconsin women and families deserve better than Scott Walker,” Atkinson continued. “He is an extremist on women’s health and he has been his entire political career.”
