Eau Claire, Oshkosh Activists Recognized as Champions for Women’s Health

Dedicated volunteers will receive special honor at Women’s Health Day of Action

Madison, WI- Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) is pleased to announce that two dedicated groups of activists, the Chippewa Valley Citizens for Women’s Health and the Citizens for Women's Health of Winnebago County, will receive the prestigious "Champions for Women’s Health" award. The award will be presented to both groups at the 2007 biennial Women's Health Day of Action and Lobby Day, held at the Monona Terrace in Madison on March 8.

Both groups diligently and persistently took action to improve women’s health care in their communities.  Over the past year, both groups have made the following strides in Wisconsin:

ü       Produced a half-hour television show about the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims bills for public television in Eau Claire.

ü       Held successful community hearings in Eau Claire and Oshkosh on Compassionate Care when anti-women’s health legislative leaders refused to hold hearings at the Capitol.

ü       Changed emergency room policy at an Oshkosh hospital to ensure rape victims consistently have information about, and access to, emergency contraception.

ü       Volunteered countless hours encouraging people to get out to vote on the issues they care about in their community.

“We felt that it was incredibly important to recognize the Chippewa Valley Citizens for Women’s Health and the Citizens for Women’s Health of Winnebago County for their tireless commitment to enhancing women’s health. Thanks to the efforts of these activist groups, the public has become more informed and engaged in achieving real change around improving increased access to health care. That’s why they are true champions for women’s health,” said PPAWI Vice President of Public Affairs Lisa Boyce.

The awards ceremony will be held during the lunch hour at the Women’s Health Day of Action and Lobby Day on March 8. Journalists interested in covering the event should contact Andrea Gage at 414-213-3717.
