Scott Walker’s True Colors
Blogs are picking up on Milwaukee County Executive Scott
Walker’s true colors as he seeks reelection on Tuesday. Critics say that
with broad strokes in his latest mail
piece, Scott Walker not only paints his opponent as unworthy of office, but
women in general as inferior.
Read the latest coverage from One
Wisconsin Now, in this letter from the group’s executive director, Scot Ross:
Scott Walker Knows Better than the Women Folk
Hey Scott,
Thanks so
much for explaining to me what’s wrong with Milwaukee County in your
latest mailer. You know the one I’m talking about, with the
little blond girl on the front, in a police uniform with a badge that reads
“City of Toyland.” Now, it all makes sense to me—you’re
not playing around—the women must go.
This mailer
is really a trifecta perfecta. In this one picture, you clearly explained that:
• Your
female opponent is weak
• Any
female candidate running for office is weak
• Women
are unfit to work in law enforcement
Yep,
it’s a scary world when little girls are in charge of policing the big
city. I mean, according to you, girls like Lena Taylor would do silly stuff,
like keep our teens out of prison and work to keep guns off the streets. But
man, do I feel more confident when I open it and see the real law
enforcement—men, predominantly white, of course. Whew! Doesn’t
everyone know that males are best equipped for serious jobs, like law enforcement
and County Executive? Maybe all females are too “soft on crime” to
effectively enforce the law and keep our streets safe.
And if you
are, as you say in your mailer, fighting “hard to protect our families
and way of life,” does that mean this “girls out” rule should
apply beyond law enforcement?
When I looked
at your record, that seems to be your primary goal:
• You
sponsored legislation to allow pharmacists to refuse to dispense safe, legal
birth control prescriptions. (AB 168, 2002)
• You
voted to eliminate family planning health care services for low-income women.
(AB 831, 2002)
• You
voted to allow health care providers to withhold medical information and to
refuse routine prenatal care to women. (AB 360, 2002)
Adding the
insult of this mailer, which paints women as weak, to the injury you’ve
already inflicted on women’s health care is a brilliant move, Scott. Now,
let’s see if you can sell this backward thinking as our “way of
life” to the masses.

Compare the Candidate for
Take a look at
how Scott Walker’s women’s health care record, which earned him a
0% rating from PPAWI, stacks up against Lena Taylor’s:

ü For five years in the state Legislature,

ü Lena Taylor sponsored legislation to stop
pharmacists from refusing women their safe, legal birth control prescriptions.

“Lena Taylor, a PPAWI endorsed candidate, is the right
choice for Milwaukee County Executive,” said PPAWI Executive Director
Lisa Boyce. “One look at Lena Taylor’s stellar record of supporting
improved access to health care tells you what women’s health advocates of
this state have long recognized—Lena Taylor understands what we need to
move Milwaukee County forward.”

Both anti and pro-women’s health care organizations
agree that Roe v. Wade is in greater danger now than at anytime since
this 1973 decision legalized abortion throughout the country. And that is why
our state Supreme Court is so important.
Since 1849, Wisconsin has had a criminal abortion statute
on the books that could send women to prison. If Roe falls, Wisconsin could become one of the first states in the
nation to criminalize abortion. Health care advocates may have to turn to the
state Supreme Court to protect women and physicians from being sent to prison.
“We need to make sure
that our next justice respects a woman’s autonomy and right to make
personal, private health care decisions. Mike Gableman’s record, and his
endorsement from Wisconsin Right to Life, an organization that has worked for
decades to criminalize abortion, shows that his victory would be bad for women
and bad for Wisconsin,” said PPAWI Public Policy Analyst Nicole
Safar.
Justice Butler is supported by
the entire Wisconsin Democratic Congressional delegation, including long-time
progressives Senator Russ Feingold, and Representatives Gwen Moore and Tammy
Baldwin. During his long judicial career
he earned the wide respect of his judicial colleagues and has been endorsed by
more than 220 judges statewide. Justice
Butler has received many top accolades as a justice, including being named
“Top Judge” in municipal court by Milwaukee Magazine and serving as
the President of the Wisconsin Municipal Judges Association. Justice Butler is a faculty member of the National
Judicial College, where he provides instruction to judges. He has won numerous humanitarian awards and
has received many accolades for his years of service to Wisconsin.
While PPAWI is not issuing an
endorsement in the race, the organization is educating voters on both
candidates’ records. View
