PPWI Asks Wisconsin Supreme Court to Protect Abortion Rights
A message from PPWI President & CEO
Tanya Atkinson, February 22, 2024
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI) is asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to interpret Wisconsin's constitution as it relates to making decisions about whether and when to have a child, including the right to choose to have an abortion.
Abortion Appointments
If you need abortion care, PPWI has three locations currently available. Please schedule an appointment in Milwaukee, Madison, and Sheboygan.
On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court took away our constitutional right to abortion overturning 50 years of court precedent. At that time, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin made the agonizing decision to suspend abortion services to protect the physicians and staff who care for patients and our communities from the threat of being prosecuted under an archaic Wisconsin law criminalizing abortion. For more than a year, patients have been forced to navigate significant barriers to access safe, legal abortion, if they were able to access that care at all.
A decision by the Dane County Circuit Court in December made it clear that the 1849 law does not apply for voluntary abortions. The decision allowed Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to restore this necessary reproductive health care. We are incredibly grateful to the many supporters across Wisconsin who didn’t give up and helped in so many ways to make this possible.
Planned Parenthood will never back down until abortion access is protected -- and expanded -- for the patients who count on us for care. No matter what.

PROTECT
It's crucial to codify reproductive rights into law in Wisconsin now that abortion services have been restored. This ensures that these rights remain protected, regardless of who sits on the Supreme Court.
Abortion Access is already under attack. Wisconsin Republicans passed a 14-week abortion ban.
EXPAND
Before Roe v. Wade was overturned, Wisconsin already had numerous restrictions that made it difficult for people who could get pregnant to access this essential health care services. On November 1, 2023, Democratic legislators introduced the Reproductive Freedom Act, aiming to repeal some of these barriers with three key components.
- Reproductive Freedom Act
Restores the power of individuals to make their own pregnancy health care decisions by removing medically unnecessary restrictions and bans on abortion care, and removes inappropriate political interference into the doctor-patient relationship. - Patient's Right to Medically Accurate Information Act
Affirms the obligation of health care providers to provide medically accurate information to patients, and creates a right for patients to receive medically accurate information from their health care provider. - Stop Publicly Funded Coercion Act
Ensures that publicly funded pregnancy counseling facilities provide all-options counseling - including abortion.
